Explore the Enterprise and Train to Fly Shuttle!
« on: 26 August 2010 12:20 PM »

You can now explore the Enterprise and Train to Fly an Original Series Shuttle Craft in the newly released fan game for PC, created by game studio, Gambit Realm!

Released on the 23rd of August, “Shuttle Flight Training” is the first demo of a freeware product being developed by Gambit Realm, which aims to faithfully recreate the Original Series Enterprise in authentic details using original blueprints as their guidelines – at least that is what developer Paul Weston tells us on the official website for the project!

We wanted every room, every deck, and all the cool control panels,  medical beds, phasers, dilithium crystals and antimatter storage pods we  could get.

We wanted all the turbolifts and no load time between  locations and we wanted to hop in the shuttle and fly by the ship…

The game is being built on the Torque 3D engine which the developers hope will allow them to fufill their vision and we have to say, that after playing the demo, we are tentativly impressed.   The demo includes two locations on the 1701 Enterprise, its Bridge and the main shuttle bay.

Both locations seem to have been re-created very accuratly (though perhaps we would have to get James Cawley to have a play to verify that) and the graphics quality was very high, even on our laptop.

Modelling and Environmental quality seems to have been prioritised right now, over, for example, player animations which we assume will come down the line, however considering that this is a demo, there are several very cool features you can try out, such as flying the shuttlecraft through several training missions (including Maneuvering and Combat).   The controls take a little getting used too, and we assume that they are a work in progress also, but everything we have seen so far is very impressive – you even get a crew that loads up and wander around, including representations of Kirk, Spock, Uhura (hubba hubba), Sulu, Chekov, Scotty and probably a few that we are forgetting!

In addition, the developers have included a LAN capability, meaning that those of you on a Local Area Network, can install the server software and fly combat missions against other members of your network!   This functionality suggest that WAN (Internet) play will be available down the line, perhaps in another version!

All things considered, this is another impressive Star Trek Fan Game to add to your watch list and it is already much further along than some of the other Fan Game projects out there which gives them some extra points in our books!

We are working to line up an interview with the games developers very soon, so if you have any questions you would like to ask, please leave them in the comments thread for this article and we will be sure to ask them!

Until then, download the demo at the games official website, http://gambitrealm.com/index.php?ID=4&Lang=En

This is damned exciting news. I mean, really! Explore the USS Enterprise!! :startrek021:

The site has mentioned that it will have totral exploration of the entire ship...

Quote
When finished, Star Trek fans can finally go… where they have only dreamed of so far, they will be able to explore all the nooks and crannies of the original ship.

... I cannot wait!!!
And a shuttle flight demo is downloadable now, with site sign up of course. That will be neato! lol
Beam me up Scotty!

One quick question for them Zach, if you get the chance.

Will there be any interactive opportunities on board the Enterprise? Can we operate the comm station or a transporter perhaps?

Hello everybody

I enjoyed doing the interview with Zach today,  hopefully it can provide you all with some answers to your questions.  Feel free to post here knowing I am watching the topic and will reply as best I can.

Quick answer to poster above - yes, our current all-decks mission has lots of clickable buttons throughout the ship.  All the doors whoosh, you can raise or lower sulu's popup nav visor, you can beam an away team on and off the transporter pad on deck7, beam cargo on and off the cargo transporters on deck 10 and deck 23, turn red alert on and off, open and close the shuttlebay doors, use all the turbolifts to go anywhere, and more is always being added in.

Our plan was to have a full simulation of the ship as it appeared in season 2, complete with that nostalgic look the series had.  Future ideas include possibly recreating episodes in real time and have you be able to see and maybe influence the action from anywhere on the ship.   But we'll have  to see :)

For now play the demo and leave feedback.  We like to hear what people think...

Cheers

Hello everyone,

We are pleased to announce our third patch for the Star Trek: NCC1701 game demo. This is a major update with many bug fixes and enhancements:

- several bug fixes related to scoring, targets, etc
- additional keyboard / mouse control options ("freelook" mode available)
- improved help screens and "How To Play" info
- Colour 3D renderings of decks on the turbolift maps
- Bigger, better explosions for flying vehicles and weapons
- Klingon Battle Cruisers now fire homing torpedoes (!)
- Updated ship's hull with more windows
- "Female Officer" class added to character selection choices
- Improved AI logic (upgraded to AI Kit v. 1.5)

To get this update, log into our members' area, and go to the Downloads page, where you will see this patch listed at the bottom of the list. It is about a 9 megabyte download.

Also, we are looking for more feedback about your experiences with the game. Does it run well on your machine? Are you able to control the shuttle and your player OK? Are you lost in terms of knowing what to do, or are you getting along OK? Please send feedback to us using the contact forms on our website, or by posting in our thread at TREK BBS (see link on the main FREE PLAYABLE DEMO page).

Many thanks for your interest - we have had over 750 downloads from 51 countries in all, in our first month of release. We are very pleased with the response and look forward to continued development.

Live long and prosper,
Paul Weston

Greetings Earthlings!

We are pleased to announce a major new release of our NCC1701 game... The base download now includes 2 additional decks below the main shuttlebay, and you can now move shuttles up and down the main elevator to and from the garage and maintenance areas.

New consoles are available on-board, with many new buttons to push. We also have a bunch of destroyable objects for you to blow up, and more areas of the ship to explore.

For our registered users, we have provided a small downloadable file that will actually unlock the entire lower hull - decks 15 through 24, as a separate mission. So you can finally fully explore this part of the ship, where there is much to see and do.

Visit http://gambitrealm.com to download the latest 2.0 base game version (250 MB download - and requires that you delete your existing installation first), and then visit our members' area - Downloads section - to obtain your patch that will unlock the entire lower hull (a tiny 400 KB download).

We are happy to get this out just in time for the new year, and hope you all enjoy it. A lot of hard work goes into this project, but your support and feedback keeps us going. In the new year, work continues - having now almost completely furnished the lower hull, we move on to the neck and saucer sections. Stay tuned, and visit our website frequently to keep abreast of our progress.

Live long and prosper!
