If you check out the Champions Online website, they are using the graphic as a release date for that online game...

that says "meanwhile" in the sort of way comics say "meanwhile elsewhere in the world" probably to gather up speculation and publicity for its re-annoucment

edit: here is a thread on the Champions boards about the timer http://forums.champions-online.com/showthread.php?t=6167

Certainly not a release date for Champions, they have already stated that it won't be released, at the very earliest, until the 1st quarter of 2009.

It's definitely an announcement but for what remains to be seen. They have said that they are developing more than one MMO at the same time as Champions.

The image was created by Perpetual for STO, yes, Cryptic maybe using it for another game....but they would not be allowed to use that image unless they owned the copyright for it........ thus, Cryptic must own the copyright on that STO image, which kind of seals it really. Most games companies of crypitcs size don't just grab random imahes from the web either, they know better than to do things that cóuld cause legal implications like that.

Welcome back Suri!

I understand what you are saying, but at the same time, I am trying to apply business sense to it as well. What if Cryptic bought the rights to PE's stuff, but not to use it for STO, but some other sci-fi project? That's what I am getting at. I may be wrong but I seem to remember that Cryptic was working on some secret project BEFORE the PE collapse. So, if they were already building a space MMO, the best business move they could make would be to buy STO and let it die with them since their own project might have been further along.

All speculation of course...

All I am saying is I get a really bad feeling out of today's news. Not to dampen everyone's spirits, but something tells me this is not going to be our time, and that we have a longer road ahead of us. I surely hope I am wrong, but right now, my gut tells me otherwise.

Ya' know though.

Even if this is solid proof and we get the announcement when the timer runs out...

...we still may have a long road ahead.

Another three years if they make it from scratch (best guess).

Some Trek developers out there like Erik Bethke ( Lead Developer: Starfleet Command ) say it can be done in 18 months.

What is your best guess on a timetable for a 'stage1' only launch of ST:O???  Stage 1 being: Space only. Limited planet activity. None one or a few hubs to walk around/play in, No player owned planet dwellings,...
