How to Record STO-Radio for future playback with VLC
« on: 15 August 2010 08:31 PM »
This tutorial does not cover how to schedule when a recording starts and stops. Heres an example of how this can be used.

I have dinner around 6PM EST and I don't eat in front of my computer because A theres no room for my plate and B I don't want to gum up my keyboard or mouse. Problem is Mondays at 6PM EST is when You Got Mathed! starts. So at six I start recording and then I wait and hour or so and check to see if You Got Mathed! has finished If so I stop recording and listen to the file. If it hasn't finished I just wait another hour and come back. (It doesn't matter how much I go over cause I stop listening when the show finishes.

Now for the tutorial.

  • Download and Install VLC from http://www.videolan.org/vlc/
  • Open VLC
  • Press CTRL + p to open the preferences panel. To make this tutorial easier to follow please change the settings display to "simple" (Lower Left-hand corner) And switch to the default theme
  • On the left side of the preference panel is a list of categories. Click the one labeled "Inputs & Codecs"
  • In the file section click the browse button to choose where to save your recorded files. ex C:\Users\<youruser>\Desktop\Recorded
  • Make sure the textbox to the left of the browse button shows the correct path and click save
  • Click View -> Advanced Controls.
  • VLC should now look like this:
  • Now go to Media -> Open Network Stream (Or ctrl + n)
  • In the network url box type "http://83.222.233.100:8014/listen.pls" and click play
  • once the radio starts playing click this button: to start recording
  • Now lets say you go eat dinner and than spend half an hour yacking with your BFF on the phone and you come back to your computer and the show is over so you click the record button again.
  • To listen to your recording go to the directory you specified in Step 5 and their should be an mp3 file there. Open it up and listen to your show

Let me know what you think of this guide.

You know none of this would be necessary if they would update the On demand content.

The On-Demand page should be updating every Wednesday. If this is not the case, please let us know so we can look into the server and determine the issue. Thanks for listening!

I have been getting behind on keeping the On-Demand system up to date, I am sorry about that and I will make it part of the management process so I am not the only one responsible for the system.
